The Heritage of Liuli
Rooted in Zibo, one of China’s earliest centers of glass artistry,
Liuli flourished during the Ming and Qing dynasties,
serving both imperial courts and daily life.
Born from mineral stone and refined by flame,
it reflects centuries of craftsmanship —
where tradition meets constant reinvention.
Q&A
About LIULI
LIULI is a traditional Eastern art medium with a history spanning thousands of years.
It is neither ordinary glass nor natural crystal. Rather, Liuli is an artistic glass created from mineral-based materials and shaped under intense heat.
In our studio, Liuli is formed using the flameworking technique — an artisanal process in which molten glass is sculpted by hand under an open flame. Each piece is individually shaped, gradually refined, and carefully annealed to achieve structural integrity and luminous depth.
Because every work is crafted freehand, subtle variations in tone, dimension, and internal air bubbles are natural expressions of the process. These nuances ensure that no two pieces are ever identical.
Valued for its clarity, layered translucence, and interaction with light, Liuli continues to be regarded as a material of cultural significance and collectible artistic merit.
Because each piece is individually handcrafted under high-temperature flame, slight variations in proportion, color transitions, and surface flow may naturally occur.
While we carefully follow the original design and overall composition, lampworked Liuli is shaped in real time by hand and fire, making exact duplication impossible.
These subtle variations are not imperfections, but intrinsic characteristics of handmade art — ensuring that every piece is uniquely its own.
Each piece is created upon order rather than taken from ready-made stock.
Lampworked Liuli is shaped gradually under high-temperature flame, where every detail is formed by hand. After sculpting, the artwork must undergo controlled cooling and careful finishing to ensure structural integrity and refined surface quality.
This process cannot be rushed by machinery.
The 3–10 day creation period reflects the time, precision, and attention required to honor true handcrafted artistry.
Liuli is an artistic glass medium and is best displayed indoors, away from sudden temperature changes and strong impact. For optimal presentation and dust protection, we recommend placing your artwork in a glass display cabinet or under a protective display cover.
For routine care, gently wipe the surface with a soft, dry cloth. If cleaning is needed, use a slightly damp soft cloth and dry immediately afterward. Avoid abrasive or chemical cleaning agents.
Please do not place the artwork in a dishwasher, soak it in water for extended periods, or use ultrasonic cleaning machines, as these may affect the structural integrity or surface finish.
With proper care and display, your Liuli piece will retain its luminous beauty and refined clarity for years to come.
We offer a range of customization options within our collections.
Clients may select preferred design elements, dimensions, and color direction. Each piece is then individually shaped by hand under high-temperature flame, with the final execution guided by the artist to preserve overall balance and artistic integrity.
Because lampworked Liuli naturally develops subtle variations in flow and light interaction, even works created under the same specifications will retain unique characteristics.
