How Liuli is Made: The Craft Behind the Art
The creation of Liuli is a process that combines material science, heat, and human skill. From early techniques linked to bronze casting and ceramic glazing, the craft gradually evolved into a refined system of high-temperature glassmaking.
Artisans developed a wide range of techniques, including hot-forming, lampworking, carving, bead-making, and inner painting. Among these, the Shandong-style tradition of inner painting brought a particularly strong artistic dimension, transforming Liuli into a medium for detailed visual expression.
Each step in the process requires precise control, yet also allows room for variation. Factors such as temperature, timing, and manual handling all influence the final result. Because of this, no two pieces are ever completely identical.

In the modern era, Zibo Liuli has undergone significant transformation. After the mid-20th century, production shifted from individual workshops to organized industrial systems, with factories such as the Boshan Fine Art Liuli Factory playing a central role.
From the 1970s onward, the industry expanded rapidly. Product categories grew, production capacity increased, and Liuli works were exported to more than 40 countries and regions. At the same time, cultural recognition increased through exhibitions, documentaries, and international exchanges.
Today, Liuli continues to evolve through innovation. Technologies such as digital design, 3D printing, and new material development are now integrated into the creative process, expanding the possibilities of form and expression.
Beyond production, Liuli has also entered contemporary cultural life. It appears in exhibitions, cultural markets, and design spaces, connecting traditional craftsmanship with modern lifestyles.
